"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." - John 10:27
If there's one question I get asked more than any other, it's this:
How do you know it's God speaking?
And honestly? I love that question. Because it tells me that you're hungry — and hunger is exactly where this whole beautiful journey begins. Today I want to walk you through three simple, practical steps I've learned for following the Holy Spirit in daily life. Not perfectly. Just faithfully.
Part 1 | Get Hungry (And Stay Hungry)
Everything begins with hunger. Not the kind you perform or manufacture — the real, honest kind where you simply say to God, "I want more of You. I want to know what it looks like to be led by You every single day."
Here's what I've learned: God loves a hungry heart. He doesn't need us to have all the answers before He starts speaking. He just needs us to want to hear. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him — and that reward includes the incredible gift of being led and guided by His Spirit through the details of your actual life.
Hunger is what opens the door. It keeps you paying attention. It keeps you leaning in instead of drifting off into autopilot. So if you want to grow in following the Holy Spirit, start by asking yourself honestly: Am I genuinely hungry for more of God? And if you are — even just a little — tell Him. That prayer is more powerful than you know.

What if finding your tribe wasn't something you had to force? What if it was something you could actually ask God to do with you?
Part 2 | Pay Attention to What Keeps Coming Back
Once you're hungry, you start to notice things. A thought that won't leave. An impression that lingers. Something that comes to mind again and again, even when it's inconvenient. That's often the Holy Spirit getting your attention.
I remember once being on my morning walk, nearly home, already running late for work — and getting this quiet nudge to go and check the post box. I argued with it. But the thought stayed. I went. The box was empty. I was frustrated. And then I heard this gentle thought in my spirit: "I'm teaching you how to be obedient, not rewarding you with what you think you should find."
That moment changed how I listen. Because I realised God is always training me in the small things — the inconvenient things — so that when the bigger things come, I'm already practiced in saying yes. Start paying attention to what keeps coming back. Write it down. Ask God: Is this You? And then take one small, faithful step.
Part 3 | Be Quick to Repent When You Miss It
Nobody talks about this part — but it might be the most important of all. Because we will miss it sometimes. We'll feel the nudge and talk ourselves out of it. We'll let fear win in the moment. And then the enemy swoops in with condemnation: You didn't listen. He's going to stop speaking to you.
That voice is a liar. Romans 8:28 says God works ALL things together for good for those who love Him. That includes the moments we stumble. The way through is simple: don't spiral. Just turn back quickly and say, "Lord, I'm sorry. Help me do better." No grovelling. No shame spiral. Just honest repentance and a fresh willingness to keep learning.
Think about how we respond when a toddler falls while learning to walk. We don't scold them. We cheer them on. We scoop them up. That is exactly what God does for us. So let yourself be scooped up. Get back up. Keep walking. He's not going anywhere.
✨ Say “Yes” to God’s Invitation
Following the Holy Spirit is for you — right now, exactly as you are, with the hunger you already have. Three things: stay hungry, pay attention, and be quick to repent when you miss it. That's the whole thing. God is already leading you.
Come on this adventure with Him — one small, faithful step at a time. All you have to do is say yes.
