Episode 300 - How To Know When You're Hearing God

"Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? At the highest point along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand." — Proverbs 8:1-2 (NIV)

... Have you ever felt that check in your spirit — that unsettling feeling that stops you in your tracks — and found yourself wondering, "God, is this You telling me not to go forward? Or is this the enemy trying to hold me back?"

Friend, you are not alone. This is one of the most common questions Christians wrestle with. But here's the good news: the Bible doesn't leave us without answers. God loves to lead us, wisdom is actively calling out to us, and we never have to stay stuck.

Part 1 | Wisdom Wants to Speak You Just Have to Listen

One of the most encouraging discoveries you can make in your Christian walk is that God is not reluctant to guide you. Proverbs 8 gives us this striking image of wisdom standing at the crossroads and the city gates, raising her voice and calling out to anyone who will listen. This isn't a picture of a God who is hard to reach or slow to respond — this is a God who is actively pursuing you with His wisdom and guidance every single day.

So many of us approach prayer as though we need to convince God to speak. We wonder if we're worthy enough, bold enough, or spiritual enough to hear His voice. But Proverbs 8 turns that thinking on its head. Wisdom is already speaking. The Holy Spirit is already leading. Our part is simply to come with humble, open hearts and say, "Lord, I want to hear You." The moment you stop striving and start listening, everything changes. You step into a place of partnership with God where He delights to guide your steps.

Part 2 | Ask for Clarity God Gives It Generously

Here is something that genuinely brings me so much peace: God does not expect us to have it all figured out. When you come to Him confused and unsure about a decision, that is not a sign of weak faith — it is actually a beautiful act of trust. You are saying, "I don't want to move without You, Lord." And He honours that.

James 1:5 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God — who gives generously to all without finding fault — and it will be given.

No conditions. No spiritual hoops to jump through. Just ask. You can pray something as simple as: "Lord, I genuinely don't know if this check is from You or the enemy. Will You please make it clear?" He will answer. He will bring clarity, peace, and confirmation in ways that are personal and specific to you. Don't feel pressured to decide before God has confirmed it. Give Him the space to speak, stay teachable, and watch how He gently and faithfully leads you.

Part 3 | God Confirms His VoiceKeep Your Community Close

One of the ways I've seen God speak most beautifully is through community. A friend of mine recently felt a check in her spirit about a missions trip she really wanted to join. She wasn't sure if it was God or her own hesitation, so she kept her heart open. A few days later in a casual conversation, another friend admitted she felt exactly the same unease. Suddenly that quiet check became a clear confirmation — for both of them.

God speaks through the still, small voice inside us. But He also speaks through trusted people, through circumstances, and through the peace that passes all understanding. You don't have to carry the weight of discernment alone. Bring your community into the conversation. Ask people you trust to pray with you. God is not limited to one channel — He is creative, personal, and thoroughly committed to making Himself known to those who seek Him.

Say “Yes” to God’s Invitation

You don't have to stay stuck, friend. You serve a God who stands at every crossroads of your life and calls out to you with wisdom, love, and direction.

The next time you feel that check in your spirit, don't panic — lean in. Ask Him for more. Wait for His confirmation. Walk in community. And trust that the God who began a good work in you is faithful to complete it. He's leading you. Step by step. Day by day. 💛

Blessings to you
