"Love the Lord your God with all your heart… and love your neighbour as yourself." Mark 12:30–31
The greatest commandment Jesus left us with. And we do try, don't we? We put a lot of effort into being kind to people. Somebody has a baby, we organise a meal train. Somebody passes away, we go and offer condolences.
But there's a bit at the end where we trip up. As you love yourself.
Because the Bible is super clear — we can only be as kind to others as we are kind to ourselves. So here are three super practical steps.
Step 1 | Ask God what He thinks of you
Not what you think about yourself. Not what somebody else has said about you. What He thinks.
So take some time and just say to Him: "Lord, will You show me how You feel about me?"
And then pay attention. The first memory that comes up. A song that comes up. A way you just feel His love. Start recording that — write it down, don't let it float off.
Then go and find a couple of scriptures about what God says about you. Psalm 139:14 — fearfully and wonderfully made. Beautiful, right?
Because here's the thing, my friend. What we think about ourselves isn't the truest measure. What somebody else thinks about us isn't the truest measure. It is exactly what God thinks, and that is the only thing that's important.
Most of us skip straight past this step and go to trying harder. Start here instead.

Most days, without realizing it, we're agreeing with one half of that verse or the other.

Sometimes we get so frustrated, convinced we're waiting on the Lord for something — when actually He's already put it in place.
Step 2 | Look at yourself with compassion
Now take those scriptures and write them in the first person. Psalm 139:14 becomes: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
And this is why I was in my bathroom — because now we're going to the mirror.
Because we can say it and not really mean it, right? So what if we actually stood there and looked at ourselves with compassion? Stop. Take a deep breath. And go: well, if God thinks that much of me, if God says I am fearfully and wonderfully made… then regardless of what I think about myself, I can put my own judgment of me aside for a moment.
And then invite Him in. "Holy Spirit, will You help me to love me as much as You love me? Will You help me to see myself through Your eyes?"
That's not a technique, friend. That's a partnership.
Step 3 | Speak the declarations out loud
Now we get to say it. Out loud, with your own name in it: "I, Lisa, am fearfully and wonderfully made. That is what God says of me."
You can stop at one if that's where you feel to stop. But why not make a couple? Ask yourself — how do I want to be in the world today? What does God say about me?
I am kind. I am at peace. I am patient. I can persevere no matter what the circumstances are. I am strong, because the joy of the Lord is my strength. I am protected, because God is my protector. And anything I've done wrong, God can turn around — Romans 8:28.
Because faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. The more we speak the Word, the more our faith rises — and the more we're able to walk in love with ourselves, and not just trying very hard to love everybody else.
✨ Say “Yes” to God’s Invitation
I've started doing this with my grandsons, too. Same bathroom, same mirror, saying I am statements over each other before we walk out the door in the morning.
And as you do this each day, you begin to hear what God says about you louder than the default thinking you've believed for far too long. The truth will set you free.
Remember — not by might, not by power, but by His Spirit. This is Him rewriting our mindsets. So let's do it together.
Will you accept His invitation today? 💛
