How to Build Spiritual Habits
That Draw You Closer to God:
We all live by habits. Some of them shape our mornings, others guide how we eat, work, or relax. But did you know that your spiritual habits can either draw you closer to God—or quietly pull you further away from Him?
In today’s post, I want to share how to recognize the difference between good and bad spiritual habits, how to cultivate the ones that fuel your faith, and how to let go of the ones that drain your connection with the Lord.
Good vs. Bad Spiritual Habits
Jesus said in John 10:10,
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
This verse is a simple litmus test for your habits:
- Good habits bring abundant life—joy, peace, and a deeper awareness of God’s presence.
- Bad habits stir up stress, doubt, resentment, and disconnect you from His heart.
If a habit leaves you feeling heavy, anxious, or self-reliant instead of God-dependent, it’s likely pulling you away from Him. On the other hand, if it increases your faith, hope, and love—it’s worth keeping.
| Step 1: Desire to Be Closer to God 💖
Every lasting change starts with desire. Before focusing on discipline or willpower, ask yourself: Do I truly want to be closer to God?
When you reach that point of saying, “Lord, I’m tired of being distant from You—I want to walk closely with You,” that desire fuels the decision to start new habits. Desire is the spark that ignites discipline.
| Step 2: Notice What Builds Faith vs. What Builds Doubt 📖
Pay attention to how certain activities affect your spirit. For example:
- Listening to worship music may lift your faith.
- Certain podcasts or TV shows may leave you feeling empty or negative.
- Talking with life-giving friends can strengthen your joy.
- Scrolling endlessly on social media may stir comparison and doubt.
Write these observations down. Over time, you’ll see clear patterns of what draws you into God’s presence and what distracts you from Him.
| Step 3: Do the Things That Bring Life—On Purpose ✨
Now that you know what helps you connect with God, do those things intentionally and consistently.
Here are a few ideas:
Create a personalized worship playlist.
Buy a journal you love writing in for your quiet time.
Take a prayer walk on a route that refreshes you.
Sit under a tree at lunch and read Scripture.
Listen to the Bible or uplifting podcasts during your commute.
The more you fill your life with faith-building habits, the less appealing the draining ones become. It’s not about obsessing over what to stop doing—it’s about overflowing with the life of God until the counterfeit loses its grip.
✨ Building Habits That Last
The beautiful thing about walking with God is that the more we practice the habits that connect us to Him, the more natural they become. What starts as a small intentional choice—like putting on a worship song in the morning or opening your Bible before checking your phone—soon becomes the rhythm of your life.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with one simple habit that helps you feel God’s presence, and do it consistently. As you lean into Him, you’ll find that those life-giving habits become the way you naturally live each day. Over time, they shape a lifestyle of closeness with the Lord where peace, joy, and faith overflow.
Will you accept His invitation?
Blessings to you
