Episode 282:
How to Stay Connected to God When You’re in Pain

Lisa van den Berg, How to Stay Connected to God When You’re in Pain (3 Practical Tools)

We all go through seasons where staying connected to God feels harder than usual — especially when we’re in pain.

Whether it’s physical pain, emotional struggles, mental battles, or grief, those moments can leave us feeling distant from God.

You love the Lord, you know the Word… but sometimes the heaviness lingers.

Over the years, my husband Frans and I have walked through many of those seasons — and today I want to share 3 simple, practical tools that have helped us stay connected to God, even in the hardest times.

These tools are part of what I call our spiritual toolbox — things we can pull out and use to strengthen our connection with God, no matter what life looks like.

With that said, here are 3 Practical tools that you can use!

| 1. Borrow Someone Else’s Joy

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4)

One morning, sitting on the porch with Frans (he’s battled chronic illness for years), I asked him:

"How do you connect with God when you feel like this?"

His answer: “When I can’t rejoice myself, I borrow someone else’s joy.”

He listens to worship videos — lets the joy of others fill the space — and that joy lifts his spirit and reconnects him with God.

That’s the beauty of the body of Christ — we get to support each other.

Action step: Create a worship playlist. Use it when you need to borrow strength.

| 2. Declare: “God Is My Plan A — I Have No Plan B”

"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith." (Hebrews 12:2)

One morning, sitting on the porch with Frans (he’s battled chronic illness for years), I asked him:

In a season where nothing seemed to change (even after trying everything we knew to do), Frans and I came to the end of our tears and said:

"Lord, You are our Plan A — and we have no Plan B."

When we stopped striving and fixed our eyes on Him — breakthrough came.

Action step: Declare aloud today: “God is my Plan A.”

| 3. Practice the Gift of Gratitude

"Give thanks in all circumstances." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

When my heart feels heavy, I simply open my hands, lift my face, and start thanking God — for anything I can think of:

"Thank You that I woke up this morning… thank You for Your love… thank You for breath in my lungs..."

Gratitude restores connection with God. It reminds us how much He loves to be with us — even in the hard moments.

Action step: Pause right now — thank God for 5 things.

Why Staying Connected to God in Pain Matters

We need these tools because pain can isolate us — from people, from hope, and from God.

But the truth is: God never leaves us. He’s closer than we think. (Psalm 145:18)

When we use these tools, we open our hearts to experience His presence again — even when our circumstances haven’t changed yet.

Final Thoughts

If you’re walking through a hard season right now, friend — you are not alone.

👉 Borrow someone else’s joy
👉 Declare: “God is my Plan A”
👉 Practice simple gratitude

And remember: Our God is bigger than any pain. He is always near.
